MARTIN, Tenn. (AP) – Myles Taylor scored 20 points shooting 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field to lead UT Martin to their first victory of the season over Rochester College 79-64 in their home opener Friday.
NAIA power Rochester (7-2) was up by as many as 12 in the first half, but a late 11-2 surge by the Skyhawks, led by Taylor’s 10 points in the last two minutes of the half, allowed UT Martin to go into the locker down by three, 33-30.
The Warriors kept the game close in the second half until back-to-back 3-pointers by Terence Smith and Bobby Jones created some separation for the Skyhawks, putting them up 69-57 with 5:08 to play.
Stavros Schizas had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, who are coming off a 30-4 season where they claimed the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division-I national championship.
