DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -Alexander Starling scored 17 points and John Holmes added 13 as Bethune-Cookman opened its season with a 70-64 triumph over Edward Waters College.
Bethune-Cookman took a 24-point lead in the second half. But Jean Metelus, who collected all of his 13 points in the second half, helped the Tigers (4-2) surge on to a 24-5 run and closed the margin to two points, 51-49, with 6:05 to play.
The Wildcats increased their margin to 60-49 with 4:07 left in the game on a Dominque Whatley score.
Edward Waters closed the gap to 66-62 with 38.3 seconds left, but Clifford Reed hit four free throws to seal the victory over Bethune Cookman.
Watley finished with 11 points and Reed with 10 for the Wildcats. Also in double figures for EWC was Byron Shemwell with 11.
Edward Waters was led by Daniel Grant’s 17 points and Vanrossi Holder added 13.
