HOUSTON (AP) -Trey Stanton scored 17 points and Arsalan Kazemi added 13 points and 14 rebounds as Rice opened its season with a 63-51 victory over St. Thomas, Texas on Friday night.
Kazemi, one of 10 players to score for the Owls, attempted only three shots – making two – and scored nine points from the free-throw line. Suleiman Braimoh added 11 points.
Jeremy Lewis led the Celts, an NAIA team, with 19 points.
St. Thomas hit seven 3-pointers in the first half to take a 30-29 lead into intermission, but Rice rallied by holding the Celts to 28.6 percent shooting in the second half while making 40.9 percent of its shots.
The Owls controlled play around the basket, outrebounding St. Thomas 50-28 and outscoring the Celts in the paint 24-10.
