 LORETTO, Pa. (AP) -Derrick Mercer scored 22 points and Garrison Carr had 21 to lead American University to a 75-68 victory over St. Francis, Pa. on Saturday.
Mercer, who made all 12 of his free throw attempts, and Carr combined for 27 first-half points to lead American (1-0) to a 42-23 halftime lead. Constantin Motnii had 14 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes of play and Bryce Simon added 10 points.
Chris Berry scored 18 points, Bassirou Dieng had a career-high 16 points and Devin Sweetney had 14 points for St. Francis (0-1).
The Red Flash closed to within 63-59 on a 3-pointer by Steve Profeta, but Mercer made eight free throws in as many attempts in the final minute to seal the win. The Eagles went 17-for-18 from the foul line overall.
