When Gordon Hayward’s halfcourt heave just missed at the buzzer of the 2009-10 season, it allowed the power conferences to keep their stranglehold on national titles.
That could change soon.
Butler came up about six inches short of beating Duke in the title game, but it gave the Bulldogs and the rest of the country’s mid-majors more reason to believe they can compete with the big-conference schools.
The next step is for a mid-major to break through and win a national title. Based on what Butler did last year and what mid-majors have done for the better part of a decade, it’s not going to be much of a surprise when it does happen.
