SAN DIEGO (AP) – Chase Tapley scored 15 points, Jamaal Franklin had 13 and transfer JJ O’Brien added 10 for No. 20 San Diego State, which beat UC San Diego 80-56 on Monday night in its final tuneup before playing No. 9 Syracuse on the flight deck of the decommissioned USS Midway.
The Aztecs will get a far tougher test when they take on the taller, bulkier Orange in the Battle on the Midway on Friday night on San Diego Bay.
San Diego State toyed with the Division II Tritons in the final minutes. A dunk by Franklin and a steal and a slam by Tapley gave SDSU a 74-44 lead and sent the Aztecs leaping and bumping hips.
After reaching the NCAA tournament for the third straight season, the Aztecs return four starters and welcome a highly touted recruiting class that includes three Division I transfers and three freshmen.
Drew Dyer led UCSD with 13 points.
