EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) – Northwestern has had back-to-back 20-win seasons and three straight NIT appearances.
One thing the Wildcats don’t have is an NCAA tournament appearance.
The school that hosted the first NCAA championship game in 1939 hopes to change that. With top scorer John Shurna leading the way, the Wildcats figure to be in contention for one this season. They’re looking for more after going 20-14 for the second straight year and advancing to the NIT quarterfinals.
Coach Bill Carmody says his players “know the past” but are not part of it. They are, however, a group that has helped raise expectations.
