WASHINGTON (AP) – Former Georgetown and NBA player Charles Smith was shot at his Prince George’s County home, according to a police official familiar with the case.
Police are still investigating a motive in the shooting, according to the police official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the information had not been publicly released.
Police said a man found with a gunshot wound at the home in Bowie was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
A search of the home early Friday turned up a large quantity of cocaine and evidence of a gambling operation, spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Reedy said.
Smith was a star guard at Georgetown in the late 1980s, earning the Big East Conference player of the year award in 1989, and he was a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic basketball team that won a bronze medal.
He then played a total of 73 games in three NBA seasons between 1989 and 1995 with the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves.
In March 1992, Smith was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison after being convicted in the March 1991 hit-and-run deaths of two Boston University students. Smith was released in July 1994 after more than two years in prison.
