BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) – Virginia Tech forward J.T. Thompson will miss this season after tearing the ACL in his left knee during a pickup basketball game.
The school says the senior injured his knee Monday and will have surgery next week. The procedure will be performed Tuesday by Dr. Marc Seigel, the team’s orthopedic surgeon.
Thompson was the Hokies’ fourth-leading scorer with 7.3 points per game last season, when he was typically the first reserve to play. He averaged 4.6 rebounds and played in all 34 games.
He scored a career-high 17 points in an overtime victory against rival Virginia.
Thompson has never redshirted, so he could return for another season in 2011 without having to apply to the NCAA for a medical waiver.
