AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas guard Martez Walker was suspended indefinitely from all team activities Friday after he was charged with misdemeanor assault of a woman at a campus residence hall,
According to campus police, authorities were called to the dorm Wednesday night, where the woman reported being assaulted by Walker, who she described as her boyfriend. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and a warrant was issued for Walker’s arrest on a charge of assault with injury/dating violence, a class A misdemeanor.
Further details were not immediately available, but the assault was not of a sexual nature, campus police spokeswoman Cindy Posey said.
Walker surrendered to authorities late Thursday. If convicted, Walker faces up to one year in jail and up to $4,000 in fines.
”We have consistently stressed to all of our student athletes for a long time that any behavior in which women are not treated with respect will not be tolerated,” coach Rick Barnes said.
Walker played in 33 games last season, averaging nearly 13 minutes and 4.7 points. Football coach Charlie Strong dismissed football players Kendall Sanders and Montrel Meander after they were arrested in July on felony sexual assault charges.
”Physical abuse and violence will not be tolerated at the University of Texas,” Texas President Bill Powers said Friday about the Walker incident.
