STORRS, Conn. (AP) – National champion UConn has awarded an athletic scholarship to junior Nnamdi Amilo, who spent last year as a walk-on practice player and played in two games.
Amilo, from New Fairfield, had two points and two rebounds, all in an 83-40 win over South Florida.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound forward is a molecular cell biology major and was named to the 2013-14 American Athletic Conference All-Academic team.
Coach Kevin Ollie praised his work ethic, academics and character in awarding him the scholarship.
He is the second UConn walk-on to receive an athletic scholarship for the upcoming season. He joins Pat Lenehan, who is also studying molecular cell biology. He also was named to the conference’s all-academic team.
