LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -Former Louisville basketball standout Kenny Payne has been hired as one of John Calipari’s assistant coaches at rival Kentucky.
Calipari announced the hiring Friday in a news release.
Payne replaces former assistant Rod Strickland, who was voluntarily reassigned to another position in the program following his arrest on a drunken driving charge.
Payne had coached since 2004 as an assistant at the University of Oregon.
He played in 10 professional basketball leagues worldwide – including four years with the Philadelphia 76ers, who took him in the first round of the 1989 NBA draft.
At Louisville, he played on the Cardinals’ 1986 national championship team. He scored 1,083 points and shot 40 percent from three-point range during his four-year career.
