The 73-year-old's departure comes a season after his longtime friend Jim Calhoun stepped down as head coach.
Blaney stayed through the 2012-13 campaign in part as a mentor to first-time head coach Kevin Ollie, and helped lead the Huskies to a 20-10 record. He said Thursday he feels now is the right time for him to retire.
Blaney joined the staff at UConn in 2001 after compiling a of 461-383 record in head coaching jobs at Stonehill College, Dartmouth, Holy Cross, where he coached for 22 seasons, and Seton Hall.
He helped Calhoun guide UConn to two national championships and six Big East titles.
