KENT, Ohio (AP) – Kent State University is suing former men’s basketball coach Geno Ford for more than $1.2 million in damages over his recent departure for Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.
The lawsuit filed April 26 in a Portage County court alleges Ford had no permission to terminate his contract with Ohio’s Kent State scheduled to expire in 2015.
Kent State also is seeking more than $25,000 in damages from Bradley. The lawsuit alleges Bradley interfered with Ford’s contract with Kent State and did not pay Kent State an early departure fee.
Bradley announced Ford as its new coach March 27.
Ford says in a statement that everything was handled “professionally and appropriately.” Bradley athletic director Michael Cross says Ford’s hiring process was handled professionally with Kent State’s “clear consent.”
