BOSTON (AP) -Northeastern University has been placed on probation for two years and has had its scholarships and recruiting privileges reduced because of violations in its men’s basketball program.
The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions says the recruiting violations included unauthorized benefits to a student-athlete and banned activity by a booster.
It says the booster encouraged an international student-athlete to travel to the United States to attend Northeastern and bought him a plane ticket.
The NCAA says the case resulted from school staff’s failure to recognize the impropriety of the booster’s involvement and a former associate athletics director’s failure to question the booster’s participation in recruiting activities in 2003 and 2004.
