INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that the NCAA’s ticket lottery for the Final Four does not violate state law.
Justice Frank Sullivan wrote the 15-page ruling that was released late Thursday.
Four fans filed suit based on behalf of “themselves and all others similarly situated” because they could not purchase tickets to the 2009 national semifinals and championship in Detroit.
But the 5-0 ruling from the court said the NCAA’s ticket plan did not constitute an illegal lottery because ticket-buyers received no prize. Those who did not get to purchase tickets were refunded the face value of the tickets they attempted to purchase.
The NCAA is based in Indianapolis. A similar lawsuit is pending in the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
