BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) -Gardner-Webb has hired Ohio assistant Chris Holtmann to be its basketball coach.
The school announced Thursday he’ll replace Rick Scruggs, who was fired last month after 15 seasons.
The 38-year-old Holtmann spent five years as an assistant at Gardner-Webb under Scruggs from 2003-08 before leaving for Ohio. Holtmann was on the bench last month when the Bobcats upset No. 3 seed Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Holtmann will take over a Big South program that has struggled. The Runnin’ Bulldogs went 8-21 last season and didn’t qualify for the conference tournament with a 5-13 league mark.
Gardner-Webb was 13-17 in the 2008-09 season.
