NEW YORK (AP) -Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim says it’s a good step. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith loves the move. North Carolina coach Roy Williams also is pleased.
There was widespread praise for the NCAA on Thursday after it announced plans to expand the men’s basketball tournament from 65 to 68 teams beginning next year.
The NCAA also unveiled a new, $10.8 billion broadcasting deal with CBS and Turner Broadcasting that will allow every game to be shown live nationally for the first time.
There was some talk about expanding to a 96-team field – a proposal that drew widespread criticism – so many were happy to see the NCAA take a more measured approach.
Williams says the change will add more good teams without tarnishing the tournament.
