EL PASO, Texas (AP) -UTEP basketball star Stefon Jackson was arrested Tuesday on charges that he hindered an investigation into a Pennsylvania shooting.
Deputy sheriffs searched Jackson’s off-campus apartment and arrested a man wanted in a separate Philadelphia murder case.
Jackson, a 21-year-old junior from Philadelphia, was being held on $3,000 bail. He faces a charge of hindering apprehension or prosecution, a third-degree felony, in a case involving his 20-year-old cousin, Willie Harden.
Harden, also of Philadelphia, was arrested Friday at a fast-food restaurant near the UTEP campus. Pennsylvania authorities say he was responsible for a March 14 shooting that wounded five people in New Castle, Pa.
Lamar Reid, a 20-year-old from Philadelphia, was arrested on a homicide warrant out of his hometown when he was found in Jackson’s apartment.
Harden and Reid were being held without bond. Jail records do not show if they or Jackson have lawyers.
Athletic director Bob Stull said Jackson’s status will be determined by “university policies.”
“Above all, our concern is for Stefon and his well-being,” Stull said in a statement. “The investigation is ongoing, and we look forward to a resolution of this matter.”
Jackson, a guard, was UTEP’s top scorer the past two years. He was the nation’s seventh-leading scorer last season, averaging 23.6 points.
