It’s hard for Tyler Smith to watch as his former team advances further in the NCAA tournament than any Tennessee men’s squad has gone before.
If his dismissal from the Volunteers in January helped get them to the regional semifinals, where they play Michigan State on Sunday, then he’s happy how things turned out.
Smith told The Associated Press in an e-mail that he’s watched every Tennessee tournament game online in between his workouts and games for Bornova in the Turkish Basketball League, where he’ll play through the end of April before returning to the U.S. for the NBA draft.
Smith was dismissed Jan. 8 for his arrest on misdemeanor gun charges. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years of judicial diversion.
