PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Vincent Council scored seven of his 12 points in the closing 5:21, including a key 3-point play off his only basket of the game, to lift Providence to a 77-68 win over Robert Morris in the second round of the NIT on Monday night.
LaDontae Henton led the Friars (19-14) with 21 points and Bryce Cotton had 20. Council added 10 assists and was 10 of 13 from the free-throw line despite shooting 1 of 9 from the floor.
Providence will play Baylor in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
Karvel Anderson had 18 points and Russell Johnson 16 for Robert Morris (24-11), which ousted defending NCAA champion Kentucky in the opening round.
BYU 90, MERCER 71
PROVO, Utah (AP) - Brandon Davies had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead BYU over Mercer and into a quarterfinal against Southern Miss on Wednesday.
Tyler Haws added 24 points, and Matt Carlino had 18 points and nine assists for the Cougars (23-11).
Travis Smith scored 19 points for Mercer (24-12) and Langston Hall added 15. Smith and Hall combined to hit 8 of 13 3-point attempts.
SOUTHERN MISS 63, LOUISIANA TECH 52
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Dwayne Davis and Jerrold Brooks scored 13 points apiece, and Jonathan Mills added 10 points and eight rebounds for Southern Mississippi.
Southern Miss (27-9) led for nearly the entire game and by double-digits for much of the second half. Reserve Rashard McGill added 10 points.
Raheem Appleby scored 17 points to lead Louisiana Tech (27-7). The Bulldogs won 18 straight games earlier in the season, but lost four of their last five. Louisiana Tech shot just 19 of 54 (35.2 percent) from the field.
Southern Miss plays BYU in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
