SAN DIEGO (AP) – After making it to the NCAA round of 16 for the first time, San Diego State might be hard-pressed to repeat the feat next year.
The Aztecs’ dream season ended with a 74-67 loss to Kemba Walker and UConn on Thursday night in the West regional semifinals.
It was the final game for three senior starters, point guard D.J. Gay and forwards Malcolm Thomas and Billy White.
The Aztecs (34-3) could lose a fourth starter if star forward Kawhi Leonard leaves for the NBA.
Leonard drew two quick fouls Thursday, including a technical for a verbal exchange with Alex Oriakhi, and went to the bench less than four minutes in. It was one of two technicals against SDSU that helped UConn gain momentum.
