Cornell’s run through the NCAA tournament is attracting a most curious collection of fans.
There’s Bill Nye, The Science Guy. He says he’s no basketball expert, but the 1977 Cornell grad is all set for Thursday night’s game against Kentucky. He’s planning to trade his blue lab coat for a Big Red shirt and watch the matchup at an alumni party in Southern California.
Then there’s Triumph, the Insult Comedy Dog. Or rather, the inspiration behind him, “Saturday Night Live” wizard Robert Smigel.
Smigel admits he never went to a game while he was at Cornell for two years in the late 1970s. But he, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and MSNBC host Keith Olbermann are among the many former Cornell students ready to root for their team.
