TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – Derrick Williams has become Arizona’s closer of sorts and has the Wildcats on a deeper run through the NCAA tournament than anyone thought.
The Pac-10’s player of the year, Williams opened the tournament by swatting away a potential game-tying shot by Memphis’ Wesley Weatherspoon with 1 second left to preserve a two-point victory.
Williams topped himself in Sunday’s third round against Texas, overcoming one of his worst offensive games of the season by getting an off-balance shot and a free throw to go in with 9.6 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a one-point win.
Next up for Williams and the Wildcats is defending national champion Duke, which beat Arizona 82-72 in the 2001 national title game.
