NEW YORK (AP) – For two days running, President Barack Obama forced CBS into difficult decisions about covering him or sticking with the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Obama, who’s a big college basketball fan, spoke to the nation about possible military action in Libya on Friday. On Thursday, he sought to assure the nation that harmful levels of radiation were not expected to reach the U.S. from Japan.
CBS took two different approaches: airing a taped summary of Obama during a lull in the sports action Thursday and covering his speech live Friday while showing the conclusion of the Texas-Oakland game on a split screen.
CBS and Turner Sports are in the first year of a 14-year, $10.8 billion contract to air the NCAA men’s tourney.
