PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -Fred Hill is getting get another chance to turn around the Rutgers basketball program.
Athletic director Tim Pernetti said Wednesday that the 50-year-old coach will return for a fifth season. Rutgers went 15-17 this year, giving Hill a 47-77 mark.
The Scarlet Knights’ 5-13 record in Big East play was their best under Hill.
Pernetti called his meeting with Hill productive and the two look forward to working together to build the program. Rutgers would have owed Hill nearly $1.5 million if it fired him.
The announcement came on the same day that Seton Hall – New Jersey’s other Big East school – fired basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez for reasons beyond the won-lost record.
