HOUSTON (AP) -The Houston Cougars are suddenly front-page news again.
The team won four games in four days to earn its first NCAA tournament berth since 1992. They got the No. 13 seed in the Midwest Region and will face fourth-seeded Maryland (23-8) on Friday in Spokane, Wash.
Houston averaged 20 victories in the first five seasons under coach Tom Penders. But that wasn’t good enough for fans who remember the glory days of Phi Slama Jama, Hakeem Olajuwon (oh-LYE’-ju-wahn) and Clyde Drexler.
Attendance dropped, local high school stars signed elsewhere and the program that was once the pride of the city struggled to find its niche in the crowded local sports landscape.
Houston limped into last week’s Conference USA tournament with a 15-15 record. After winning the tournament, there’s a new buzz around the program.
