PITTSBURGH (AP) – Another early exit from the Big East tournament didn’t prevent Pittsburgh from getting a top seed in the NCAA tournament.
The Panthers were installed Sunday as the No. 1 seed in the Southeast Region and will open Thursday in Washington against the winner of Tuesday’s first-round game between North Carolina-Asheville (19-13) and Arkansas-Little Rock (19-16).
Pitt (27-5) was ousted from the Big East tournament with a 76-74 loss to Connecticut in the quarterfinals after earning a double bye for a third consecutive season. It became the fourth Big East team in three seasons to earn a No. 1 seed after being upset in the league quarterfinals.
The Panthers also received a top seed in the NCAA tournament in 2009, despite losing in the Big East quarters. Pitt is among a record 11 Big East teams to reach the NCAA tournament.
