INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – One of the three officials who was cited for two errors and withdrew from the Big East tournament as a result was calling a Big Ten quarterfinal game Friday.
Veteran refs Jim Burr, Tim Higgins and Earl Walton missed two calls – a travel and stepping out of bounds – in the final 1.7 seconds of St. John’s 65-63 second-round victory over Rutgers on Wednesday.
Two days later, Walton was one of three officials working the game between Michigan State and No. 9 Purdue.
Michigan State dominated the first half, taking a 37-23 lead, but there were no strange calls in the first half.
On Thursday, Big East Commissioner John Marinatto said the three officials have “voluntarily withdrawn” in “the best interests of those involved.”
