RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -David Schneider’s 3-pointer with 1.5 second to play gave William and Mary its only lead of the second half Friday in the Tribe’s 58-57 victory against Georgia State in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.
The Tribe (15-15), which had lost six of seven coming into the tournament, will face Old Dominion the quarterfinals on Saturday. Georgia State finished 9-21.
The Panthers used an 11-0 run early in the first half to lead 13-6, and Leonard Mendez scored 11 points in the first 10:33 as they took their biggest lead at 21-12. Georgia State led 31-25 at halftime, but never stretched it past seven thereafter.
Mary got within one on Schneider’s 3-pointer with 43.6 seconds left, and after Mendez hit 1 of 2 free throws with 7.9 seconds left, Schneider hit again.
Schneider finished with 20 points and was 6-for-8 on 3-pointers. Danny Sumner added 17 points and the Tribe outscored the Panthers 29-9 from the free throw line.
Mendez finished with 14 and Deven Dickerson 10 for Georgia State.
