BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Samford has given first-year basketball coach Scott Padgett a four-year contract extension through the 2018-19 season.
Athletic director Martin Newton announced the deal on Friday, saying that Padgett ”possesses all of the traits to be a huge success.”
The Bulldogs entered the Southern Conference tournament starting Friday with a 13-18 record and 6-12 league mark. Padgett fields a team with four freshmen and five sophomores.
Samford didn’t release contract details.
Padgett is a former Kentucky player who spent eight seasons in the NBA after getting drafted by the Utah Jazz in the first round in 1999.
He says the extension means recruits know ”that I’m going to be at Samford.”
Padgett was promoted from assistant coach to replace Bernie Seltzer.
