ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -Reid Augst scored 27 points and North Carolina-Asheville beat Winthrop 76-68 in a Big South Conference Tournament opener on Monday night.
The Bulldogs (15-15) scored the first 14 points of the game in a rematch of last season’s conference championship game. The Eagles (11-19) won that matchup 66-48 for their 12th straight conference tournament win.
Sean Smith scored 15 points and Matt Dickey added 12 for the Bulldogs, who face top-seeded Radford in the semifinals on Thursday night.
Andre Jones led Winthrop with 18 points and Charles Corbin and Byron Faison added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
UNC-Asheville is the fourth seed for the first time since 2000 when it reached the championship game. The Bulldogs won the title as the No. 4 seed in 1989.
UNC-Asheville shot 45.5 percent from 3-point range (9 of 20) as Smith led the way with three.
