ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -New Mexico coach Steve Alford says there’s no need for any reprimand over an exchange of words after the Lobos won last weekend at BYU.
In a video posted on YouTube, Alford can be heard directing a vulgarity at BYU forward Jonathan Tavernari as the teams shook hands after New Mexico’s 83-81 victory Saturday in Provo, Utah.
During the Mountain West teleconference Monday, Alford attributed it to the emotions of the moment. He says he has called BYU coach Dave Rose to apologize.
Alford says he was trying to congratulate Tavernari, a senior, on an outstanding career at BYU, and “he didn’t want to hear that at the time.”
Tavernari later went to New Mexico’s locker room and apologized.
A Mountain West spokesman says the league is reviewing the matter.
