CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Chowan’s president and the CIAA commissioner insist it’s a perfect fit.
For the first time, a traditionally white school is part of the booming basketball tournament in the traditionally black Division II conference.
Chowan became a full-time league member this academic year. Its location in northeast North Carolina fits the geographical footprint, but Chowan is a Baptist school with a student population that’s about 50 percent black.
It didn’t stop commissioner Leon Kerry from courting Chowan. School president Christopher White, looking for a league as the school jumped from Division III, was more than happy to join.
