PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Philadelphia University basketball coach Herb Magee is one victory away from becoming the winningest coach in NCAA history.
Magee is tied with former Indiana coach Bob Knight at 902 victories. Magee is 902-352 in 43 years at the Division II school and can surpass Knight (902-371) on Tuesday when the Rams play Goldey-Beacom College.
Magee led the program to a national championship in 1970. Knight and Magee are tied in the career wins list for coaches who spent their entire career at the NCAA level.
Northern State coach Don Meyer, who announced his retirement Monday, has 922 victories between the NAIA and NCAA.
Magee says he’ll be glad when the moment passes so the focus can return to the Rams’ bid to reach the NCAA tournament.
