CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) – Center Brian Carlwell has left the Illinois basketball team.
Coach Bruce Weber says the six-foot-eleven sophomore hopes to transfer to another school after the spring semester and resume his playing career.
Carlwell hasn’t played since suffering a knee injury at the end of November. He has played in 29 games at Illinois. His career at the school has been marred by injuries and other problems.
Carlwell was the passenger in a car crashed by sophomore guard Jamar Smith in February 2007 in a drunk-driving accident. Carlwell was hospitalized with a concussion and missed the rest of the season. Smith pleaded guilty to drunk driving and is sitting out this season.
