MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -Joe Alexander led five players in double figures with 15 points as West Virginia beat Rutgers 81-63 Thursday night for the Scarlet Knights’ fifth-straight loss.
Alex Ruoff and Wellington Smith added 14 points apiece for West Virginia (17-7, 6-5 Big East), which won for just the second time in five games.
Rutgers (10-15, 2-11) is in jeopardy of missing the conference tournament for a third consecutive season. The Scarlet Knights, the worst shooting and scoring team in the Big East, never found an offensive flow and were forced into 17 turnovers that led to 29 points for West Virginia.
The Mountaineers had just four turnovers, their fewest since 2005.
West Virginia led by 15 at halftime. Rutgers scored nine straight points late in the game to get within 61-51, but the Scarlet Knights got no closer.

JR Inman, Mike Coburn, Earl Pettis and Chris Chandler scored 10 apiece for Rutgers while two others scored nine.
