COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) The Mountain West Conference reversed course Friday and said a last-second 3-pointer by James Webb III should have counted and given Boise State an 87-84 overtime victory over Colorado State.
The conference said the officials did make the right call Wednesday night with the evidence they were viewing on the replays. However, the angle they were using from a baseline camera was playing at a slower speed when aired by television and ingested by the replay system. So, the embedded stopwatch outpaced the video and led to a false reading.
During the game, the shot was overturned after officials went to the monitors and utilized a digital stopwatch embedded within the video overlay in the instant replay system. It was determined the clock didn’t start on time and thus Webb didn’t get the shot off in time. Boise State ended up losing 97-93 in double overtime.
On Thursday, the conference said in a release that a ”clear 1.2 to 1.3 seconds elapsed from the time the player touched the ball to the time the shot was released, and that the game clock did not start for several tenths of a second after the initial touch. Thus, the basket did not count.”
