CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman says he decided to fire men’s basketball coach Heath Schroyer now because it became clear that a coaching change was necessary.
Burman says with the Cowboys just 1-8 in the Mountain West Conference so far, he was concerned about the negativity surrounding the program.
He says it is better to make the move now rather than wait until the end of the season.
Schroyer was not available for comment Tuesday.
Burman says the players he’s talked to understand the decision and want to see the program turned around.
Wyoming will hire a search firm to help find a new coach. No timetable has been set.
Associate head coach Fred Langley is serving as interim head coach for the rest of the season.
