CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson wasn’t expected to play against second-ranked Duke on Wednesday night.
Team spokesman Steve Kirschner told reporters about 15 minutes before tipoff that the sophomore would be out after spraining his left ankle Sunday against Florida State. The third-ranked Tar Heels are likely to start senior reserve Quentin Thomas in Lawson’s place.
Lawson missed practice Monday and couldn’t participate in any team drills Tuesday. He dressed for Wednesday’s game and participated in the shootaround before being ruled out.
Lawson’s absence further depletes a backcourt that lost reserve Bobby Frasor to a season-ending knee injury in December.
