MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -West Virginia University president Jim Clements has apologized to the University of Pittsburgh for the rude and abusive behavior of Mountaineers fans during Wednesday’s basketball game.
In a news release issued by West Virginia on Thursday, Clements says he was “appalled and embarrassed” by fans who threw objects onto the court during Wednesday night’s game against the Panthers.
Clements also vowed to increase surveillance and security during future games.
Unruly fans have become an embarrassment for WVU. Last month they were heard on national television spewing profanities. During a game against the Louisville, students chanted the name of a woman that Cardinals coach Rick Pitino admitted having sex with outside his marriage.
