EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Michigan State coach Tom Izzo says Derrick Nix got into the best shape of his life last summer.
The 6-foot-9 center trimmed down to 266 pounds – after weighing as much as 340 in high school – and Izzo planned to play him about 20 minutes a game.
Nix, though, packed the pounds back on and that led to Izzo leaving the sophomore home when the Spartans went to the Maui Invitational.
He was able to rejoin the team after meeting with coaches and players, then the Detroiter dedicated himself to eating less and working out more.
Nix and the Spartans reaped the benefits in a much-needed win Sunday against Indiana.
He scored a season-high nine points and tripled his previous best with three assists in a career-high 23 minutes.
