MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -Da’Sean Butler scored 19 points to lead West Virginia to a 73-64 win over St. John’s on Thursday night.
Joe Alexander added 15 points for West Virginia (13-4, 3-2 Big East). John Flowers and Darris Nichols scored 10 apiece.
Reserve Larry Wright scored 15 points for St. John’s (7-9, 1-4). Anthony Mason Jr. added 14 points and Eugene Lawrence had nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Mountaineers trailed 37-36 before Butler’s 3-pointer jumpstarted a 19-6 run to give West Virginia a 55-43 lead with less than eight minutes left.
St. John’s got as close as 64-58 in the final two minutes but missed two inside shots. Butler then hit a free throw and a lay-in to clinch West Virginia’s 15th straight win at home.
West Virginia made a 13-2 run to take a 26-21 lead with 4:18 left in the half before St. John’s tied the game at 29 at the break. The lead changed six times in as many minutes to open the second half before West Virginia assumed control with the decisive run.
