SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) – Unbeaten Syracuse is headed to Pittsburgh for a Big East showdown Monday night with first place in the conference on the line.
The fourth-ranked Orange and fifth-ranked Panthers are 5-0 in the conference and poised to move up at least one spot in Monday’s new national rankings in light of top-ranked Duke’s loss to Florida State on Thursday night.
The Orange have won their first 18 and are one win from matching the best start in school history set in the 1999-2000 season, but they’ll have to play the once-beaten Panthers without leading scorer Kris Joseph.
Joseph crashed hard to the floor on a drive and the back of his head slammed the hardwood with just over six minutes left in the first half of Saturday’s home win over Cincinnati. He went to the locker room to be evaluated after scoring just two points, did not return and won’t make the trip because of recurring headaches.
Pitt (17-1) has beaten Syracuse seven straight times in the regular season and thrives in the friendly confines of the Petersen Events Center, where it has won 19 in a row.
