HOUSTON (AP) – Free agent Josh Smith has signed with the Houston Rockets following his release this week by the Detroit Pistons.
General manager Daryl Morey announced the signing of the small forward Friday. The move reunites Smith with AAU teammate and longtime friend Dwight Howard, who is in his second season in Houston.
Smith was let go by the Pistons after signing a four-year, $54 million contract in July 2013. He has averaged 15.4 points and 7.8 rebounds during his 11-year career. He averaged 13.1 points and 7.2 rebounds in 28 games this season.
The Rockets are 20-7 and second in the Southwest Division. They play at Memphis on Friday night.
The team has requested waivers on rookie Tarik Black to make room on the roster for Smith.
