SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -The Jazz have reached an agreement with Jerry Sloan on a one-year contract extension that will keep the coach on Utah’s sideline through the end of next season.
Sloan, who took over the Jazz in 1988, is the franchise’s winningest coach and needs just 46 victories to become the first coach in NBA history to win 1,000 games with the same franchise.
“Jerry has led the Jazz franchise for the past 20 years and I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Utah owner Larry Miller said in a release Monday. “He teaches the game the way it ought to be played.”
Utah has reached the NBA finals twice and won six division titles during Sloan’s tenure.
The 65-year-old Sloan is fourth on the NBA’s career wins list.
The Jazz beat the Miami Heat 110-101 Monday night.
