PHOENIX (AP) – Former San Antonio Silver Stars coach Sandy Brondello has been hired to coach the Phoenix Mercury.
She also will serve as the Mercury’s vice president of player personnel.
Brondello has been affiliated with the WNBA for 14 of the league’s 17 seasons, nine of them as a player.
She was an assistant coach for San Antonio from 2005 to 2009 and served as the team’s head coach in 2010. The past three seasons, she was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks. Brondello played on Australia’s silver medalist Olympic teams in 2000 and 2004.
She replaces interim coach Russ Pennell, who took over for the final 18 games last season after Corey Gaines was fired. Pennell said he wanted to return to college basketball.
