PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -Alonzo Mourning is angry, just as he famously was at times during his playing days.
The 6-foot-10 former Miami Heat star is standing on the edge of the airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s earthquake-ravaged capital. The temperature is 93 degrees, humidity making it feel like 111. He’s overlooking a tent city serving as a hospital, housing some of Haiti’s sick, some of their dying, some of their miracles.
The earthquake that unleashed unbelievable death and destruction on an already-third-world city struck nearly five months ago. Millions were raised in the aftermath. Millions more are needed. And Mourning is frustrated by his fear that the world has forgotten, saying “we’ve got to continue to create the awareness.”
