KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -One question swirled around Michael Beasley on the final morning of the NBA’s predraft camp. Why wasn’t he taking part in workout drills?
Turns out, Beasley had a fine answer.
“My team’s not here yet,” Beasley said. “I came early. I got on the wrong bus.”
Eventually, Beasley did go through some shooting and other on-court drills alongside O.J. Mayo, Eric Gordon and DeAndre Jordan on Friday, the final day of the weeklong session at the Disney complex near Orlando.
Beasley also had his strength and much-ballyhooed height measured, quipping that he hoped to be listed as 6-foot-3 and unable to do a single bench press at the standard 185-pound weight.
The NBA did not immediately announce Beasley’s height or release any other details of the testing. At Kansas State, where he averaged 26.2 points and an NCAA-leading 12.4 rebounds this past season, he was listed at 6-foot-10 – although speculation has been rampant that he’s probably closer to 6-foot-8.
“I want to bench press like just half a pound, just get it barely over my chest,” Beasley said, again displaying the dry humor that he’s shown often over his two days of appearances at the predraft camp. “Should I have goals? I don’t really know.”
Clearly, though, he does have goals – like being the No. 1 pick in the June 26 draft.
Beasley said Friday that he’ll only do individual workouts with Chicago and Miami, the teams that hold the No. 1 and No. 2 picks, respectively, in the draft. He did not say when those workouts would occur.
The next month will be filled with uncertainty for Beasley, as his future gets decided for him.
He insists he doesn’t mind.
“Chicago, Miami, Minnesota, Seattle, all great teams, all in good cities, all have got good coaches and good players around,” said Beasley, who left college after one season. “So I’m not really nervous about anything right now. I’m free-spirited right now.”
It showed during the workout.
r something the entire time he was on the floor.
“I’m good,” Beasley said. “What do I’ve got to be nervous about?”
