SOMERVILLE, N.J. (AP) -Attorneys for Jayson Williams say they’ll seek to have the former NBA star’s convictions for covering up a fatal shooting thrown out on grounds of racial bias.
Attorney Joseph Hayden said in court Friday that he will seek a new trial on the cover-up counts. At issue is a racial slur used by a former employee of the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office.
Defense attorneys say the remark indicates racial bias in the investigation.
Williams played nine seasons in the NBA for the New Jersey Nets and Philadelphia 76ers. He was convicted of four counts of covering up the shooting death of a hired driver at his Hunterdon County mansion in 2002.
His retrial on a reckless manslaughter count has been tentatively scheduled for January.
